A Leaf Holds Rivers and Mountains | Oriental Paper Sculpture | Art Installation
A magnified leaf. Its veins are mountain ridges; its folds, deep valleys. Morning light flows along every curve, Becoming a rushing river upon this single blade. Where the edge curls gently, There lies the shape of wind brushing over hills. It is a mountain made of air, Drifting above time itself. Millennia of sedimentary rock Are caressed by the wind into waves. Every ripple breathes; Every rise and fall conceals an ocean. As light and shadow migrate across the surface, The entire valley sways in kind. We realize that the smallest leaf can hide the deepest gorge, And the lightest paper can bear the heaviest wave. We look up, Watching how a single leaf embraces The weight of the entire world— How, with one elegant arc, It folds heaven and earth in two, Letting rivers and mountains take root in the palm of our hands. -- The Sketch vs. The Reality: Sketching was pure bliss—just a few strokes to capture the vision. My client gave me carte blanche with "Go wild, imagine anything," so I drew the linework without considering the engineering nightmares ahead. The Struggle: When production actually began, reality hit hard. This 3‑meter long, irregularly shaped organic installation was a beast. Not only was it difficult to flip over, but finding the center of gravity for hanging was a nightmare. As we layered on the random materials, the balance kept shifting. Hanging a 50kg+ structure beneath a light membrane, trying to find equilibrium from preset anchor points… the pit was so deep I wasn’t sure I could climb out. The Triumph: Thankfully, we pulled it off. This was the most anxiety‑inducing installation I’ve done this year. But every day spent papier‑mâchéing, dyeing, and rope‑twisting filled our February with purpose. The last slide shows the final piece before it was transported out. You can now find this piece at Tangmujiang (Mr. Woodcutter) in Beijing Sanlitun..
